A few weeks ago we had our friends, Kim and Barry from Rustic Garden Bistro, over for dinner and they bestowed on us a dozen multicolored eggs from the chickens they keep in their enchanted backyard. They have these really cool heirloom chickens (is that what the fancy chickens are called?) that produce the most beautiful eggs in white, beige, brown, and green.
Even the packaging is great, hand-stamped and tied with a bow. Now you don't get that from Whole Foods, do you?
In the meantime, we harvested our winter/spring crop of potatoes from our neglected garden and I was again amazed at what happens under ground when we're going about our lives. I love the purple potatoes, and with the red potatoes they look more like jelly beans than potatoes.
Naturally, I had to bring them together in one of my favorite breakfasts, a potato, tomato and bacon frittata. I shot this really quickly before I scarfed it down, but I was pleased with the mosaic effect and the great color contrast. Squint your eyes, you'll see it too.
And speaking of jelly beans, we have some tiny little Moro blood oranges, about the size of jelly beans. I'm kind of worried about whether they'll make it to adulthood since the four dwarf citrus trees I have in pots are, to put it mildly, not flourishing. I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep leaning over them with a furrowed brow. If I'm lucky, you'll see a recipe for a Moro Blood Orange Margarita around Christmastime.
